Mountain Biking
in munising

Munising is quickly making a name for itself as an up-and-coming mountain biking destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! Thanks to the hard work of the Munising Bay Trail Network (MBTN), riders of all ages and skill levels can now enjoy trails that weave through the Hiawatha National Forest, Grand Island, and even right in the heart of town. From flowy singletrack and playful bike park features to rugged island loops and beginner-friendly tot tracks, there’s a trail for everyone.

While biking is typically enjoyed here from spring to fall, the fun is now rolling into winter, with MBTN’s new groomed snow bike loop addition! Whether you’re chasing berms, coasting along Lake Superior’s cliffs, or just learning the ropes, Munising is ready to ride.

Take the ferry across Munising Bay and explore Grand Island by bike! The outer loop hugs 150-foot cliffs, passes hidden beaches, and winds past historic sites. The route mixes improved and rugged two-tracks, so mountain, gravel, and fat bikes all work well. Most riders finish the 20-mile loop in 2–4 hours, and if you don’t have your own wheels, the ferry service rents bikes right at William’s Landing.

Locals call this spot a “mountain bike playground” and for good reason! Located right off M-28, this trailhead is packed with fun features like a jump trail, rock armored trail, skills park, pump track, a technical drop trail, and a handcut tech trail. Encompassing the bike park is an outer cross-country flow trail. With a repair station, picnic area, and easy access from downtown, Munising Mountain Bike Park is the perfect hub for all-day adventures.

Just six miles south of town, Valley Spur is famous for its cross-country ski trails in the winter, but when the snow melts, it transforms into a fast and flowy singletrack playground. Families will love the smooth, root-free trails, while seasoned riders can test their skills on berms, rollers, and punchy climbs. With new signage and loops accessible through the TrailForks app, you can piece together short spins or big days in the Hiawatha National Forest.

New to biking? The Wetmore Tot Track is made for you. This half-mile loop introduces kids and bikers of all skill levels to singletrack with fun turns, gentle climbs, and a safe, welcoming vibe. Families can hang out nearby with picnic tables, grills, and playgrounds, or take on more mileage with the new Pine Line Trail, an 8-mile connector linking the Munising Township Recreation Area to the Valley Spur Recreation Area.

For a backwoods adventure, head 15 minutes south of Munising to Bruno’s Run. This 13-mile loop weaves past sparkling lakes, streams, and old-growth white pine, a true classic in the Hiawatha National Forest. Rerouted sections make it smoother and more fun than ever, offering an approachable ride for most skill levels while still delivering plenty of “wow” scenery.

Biking doesn’t stop when the snow starts to fall! MBTN is now grooming a dedicated fatbike loop out of the Valley Spur North parking lot. The 3-mile route winds through the magical Wyman Pines, perfect for fatbikes, snowshoes, or skis. Bring your pup along, bundle up, and experience Munising’s trails in a whole new season.
