Bears

experience

So what if you see a Bear?

and it sees you...

Bears in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will usually stay away from humans.

How to act if you encounter a black bear: Be loud and get big! If the bear shows aggressive behavior such as growling, huffing, or advancing towards you, back away from the animal, maintain your large stance and make noise. Pet food is also bear food. So, store pet food as if it were human food, in a vehicle or a bear-proof vessel.

Report any bear/human interactions to park staff: 906-494-2660 (summer only) or 906-387-2607

What about wolves? “A wolf attack on a human has never been documented in Michigan,” according to the Michigan Wolf Management Plan.

What about cougars? Cougars are elusive and secretive and truly want nothing to do with humans.

Protect yourself
& your pet

It is very important not to leave human or pet food around for bears to find. Once bears get accustomed to people with food, they begin
to consider humans a source for food. They can become dangerous, and often need to be relocated or put down.

You will need a leash. Your dog could encounter less than friendly wildlife or could harm other forest inhabitants.
