Get Ready for the Grand Island Trail Marathon

Lace up for one of the most breathtaking trail races in the Midwest! The Grand Island Trail Marathon is more than just a run; it’s a wilderness adventure on Lake Superior’s largest island. With three unforgettable race options, the 50K, Marathon, and Half Marathon, you’ll tackle sandy beaches, shaded forest trails, and jaw-dropping cliffs high above crystal-clear water.

It’s all happening on July 26, 2025! After a quick ferry ride from Munising, runners start hitting the trail at 6 a.m. from Williams Landing and dive straight into the wild beauty of Grand Island. The course winds through towering pines and along sandstone bluffs, all with Lake Superior never far from view. It’s a rugged, remote adventure from start to finish… and yes, a post-race plunge in the lake is practically a rite of passage. Race Options & Course Highlights

50K

  • Start: 6:00 AM at Williams Landing
  • Distance: 31 miles
  • Course: A complete lap of Grand Island with a detour to Echo Lake and the island’s summit. You’ll hit every incredible landmark, from Trout Bay and North Beach to towering sandstone cliffs and panoramic overlooks.
  • Aid Stations: Miles 4, 7, 11, 16, 22, 27
  • Time Limit: 8.5 hours

Marathon

  • Start: 6:00 AM (early start) or 7:00 AM (standard start)
  • Distance: 26.2 miles
  • Course: This race will take the same route as the 50K, without the Echo Lake extension. Experience running through the beautiful forested trails, beachside paths, and cliffside views all along the stunning Lake Superior Shoreline.
  • Aid Stations: Miles 4, 7, 11, 16, 22
  • Time Limit: 7 hours

Half Marathon

  • Start: 8:00 AM at Williams Landing
  • Distance: 13.1 miles
  • Course: A stunning, scenic loop along the shore of Murray Bay, Trout Bay’s sandstone cliffs, past Duck Lake, and through heavily forested highlands. This race features beach running, hemlock tunnels, and a thrilling descent toward Echo Lake.
  • Aid Stations: Miles 4 and 9
  • Time Limit: 4 hours

FAQs

What awards are given out?

All finishers receive a custom wooden medallion. Age group awards are available for each event (ages 12–70+ depending on distance).

How do I get to Grand Island for the race?

Shuttle buses will pick runners up from local hotels and campgrounds and bring them to the ferry dock, no driving or parking needed! Your race bib is your round-trip pass for both the shuttle and ferry. Spectators can purchase extra tickets online or at check-in ($30 adults / $20 kids).

Where should I stay?

The host hotel is the Holiday Inn Express Lakeview in Munising, overlooking Grand Island. Other local lodging options are available nearby.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! Dogs are allowed on the shuttle, ferry, and at the start/finish area, just not on the racecourse.

Is this a sustainable race?

Of course! This is a zero-waste event. Runners must carry a water bottle or hydration system—no cups are provided at aid stations.
