Ice Climbing

Ice climbing is “on the rise” so to speak. It is becoming one of the newest and most popular sports here in the Munising area. Our multitude of great waterfalls and porous sandstone cliffs in which the water seeps through make this sport possible.
Towards the end of December, the ice has formed along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island, and our various waterfalls. Miner’s Falls is a 40′ high column of ice. You will need to plan according and snow shoe or ski into the location (3 miles).

Down Wind Sports also hosts the annual Michigan Ice Fest, the largest festival of its kind, hosted along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Ice Fest
The Michigan Ice Fest is an annual festival celebrating the rise of the incredible sport of ice climbing. This year, the festival will take place February 12 – 16, 2025. You can register here or sign up at the door!
Whether you’re brand new to climbing or a seasoned pro, this festival is for you! With classes for climbers of all skill levels, presentations from some of the most famous climbers, and of course, after parties each day of the festival.
